Common Methods for Cleaning Vacuum Materials and Vacuum Systems

In vacuum applications, vacuum systems and vacuum materials inevitably become contaminated by various factors such as dust, oxides, and grease. When these contaminants affect the operation of the vacuum system or the cleanliness of the vacuum materials, it becomes necessary to clean the vacuum system and vacuum materials. Here, we will discuss the common methods used for cleaning vacuum materials and vacuum systems.
In vacuum applications, vacuum systems and vacuum materials inevitably suffer from various types of contamination such as dust, oxides, and grease due to a variety of factors. When contaminants affect the operation of the vacuum system or the hygiene of the vacuum materials, it is necessary to clean the vacuum system and vacuum materials. Here, we will discuss the common methods for cleaning vacuum materials and vacuum systems.
1. Solvent cleaning.
Solvent cleaning is the most common method for cleaning vacuum systems. Common cleaning solvents include organic solvents, detergent-containing water, dilute acids, alkalis, petroleum fractions, and various metal cleaning agents. Depending on the type of contaminant, different solvents are required for cleaning. For example, mineral oils need to be cleaned with organic solvents, while rust requires acidic metal cleaning agents.
2. Ultrasonic cleaning.
Ultrasonic cleaning uses ultrasonic cavitation to clean targets, achieving a strong physical cleaning effect that removes strongly adhered contaminants. Ultrasonic cleaning can reach complex irregular channels, which many cleaning methods cannot achieve. In application, ultrasonic cleaning needs to be combined with various cleaning solvents depending on the type of contaminant.
3. Steam degreasing cleaning.
Steam degreasing cleaning is suitable for cleaning surface grease films and lipid films. The operation method is simple and can achieve large-scale cleaning. For substrates with firmly adhered contaminants or severe pollution, steam degreasing cleaning can achieve good cleaning results after scrubbing or ultrasonic cleaning, and it is often used as the final step in cleaning glass items.
4. Electrolytic etching cleaning.
Electrolytic etching cleaning is similar to electrolytic polishing, which refers to using electrolytic action in a solvent to remove thin rust or oxide films and other contaminants from the surface of metal components. It is mainly used for alloy components with high chemical stability, such as stainless steel, heat-resistant steel, and nickel-based alloys.
5. Heating and irradiation cleaning.
Heating cleaning mainly involves placing components in atmospheric pressure or vacuum and heating them to evaporate easily volatile contaminants on their surfaces for cleaning purposes. Irradiation cleaning decomposes hydrocarbons on the surface of components through ultraviolet irradiation.
6. Discharge cleaning.
Discharge cleaning is generally used in high vacuum and ultra-high vacuum system cleaning. It utilizes electron bombardment of gas to cause desorption and removal of certain hydrocarbons. The effectiveness of discharge cleaning depends on the material of the motor, its geometric shape, and its relationship with the surface.
7. Nitrogen cleaning.
Nitrogen cleaning mainly utilizes the characteristics of nitrogen, which has low adsorption heat on material surfaces and short retention time, making it easy to be evacuated. Nitrogen is used to flush the contaminated vacuum system while occupying the adhesion space of water vapor and other gas molecules, thus shortening the evacuation time of the vacuum system.
